Collinsvale is a small rural community situated approximately 20 km from Hobart. The area retains much of its character as a separate community and village, mainly due to its surrounding hills and to its well-documented and unusual history since its settlement in the 1870's by Danish and German pioneers. Our school prides itself on its supportive school environment, where students are encouraged to build their self-esteem and thus feel worthwhile. Students are actively encouraged to respect and tolerate others' beliefs and values and to learn positive problem-solving, communication and negotiation skills. Students are also encouraged to express their own feelings, thoughts and beliefs in a positive manner. Students are helped to feel secure, valued, respected and accepted by both their peers and elders. The school, established in 1877, provides for the education of local children from birth through to Grade 6. There are three distinct class groupings: Kinder-Prep, Grades 1-2 and Grades 3-4-5-6. There is also a Parent-Child Program for children from birth to 4 years. Kindergarten children attend for three sessions per week; Monday and Tuesday and Wednesdays from 11.30 to 3.00. The 1-2 group and 3-4-5-6 class are located in the lower block, and the Parent-Child and Kinder-Prep class are located in a separate building.
The school has an ideal setting, as its grounds are beautifully landscaped with established native and exotic trees. The school times are as follows: 9.10 - 11.00; 11.30 - 1.00; and 1.40 - 3.00. Children on arrival at school are expected to prepare themselves and their rooms for lessons. They may then play outside until lessons begin at 9.10 a.m. Parents are asked to ensure that children do not arrive earlier than 8.30 a.m. A monitor system operates on the bus and all students are expected to behave sensibly and to take advice offered by bus monitors. A contract bus picks up
children from the Collins Cap area. These children are transported, free of
charge, to and from school.
